<note>This research, titled “Representation of Domestic Violence Elements in the
Film Bolehkah Sekali Saja Kumenangis (A Semiotic Analysis by John Fiske)”, aims
to reveal how domestic violence (DV) is represented through the visual and
narrative elements in the film.
The study also employs Nancy Hartsock's Feminist Standpoint Theory to
explore the position and experiences of women as victims within the patriarchal
power structure depicted in the film.
Using John Fiske’s Semiotic Analysis and a qualitative approach within a
critical paradigm, this study analyzes signs of domestic violence at three levels:
reality, representation, and ideology. Data were collected through documentation
of six selected scenes containing elements of domestic violence, along with
interviews with several informants as secondary data.
The findings indicate that the film does not only portray physical violence,
but also verbal and psychological abuse stemming from gender inequality and male
dominance in the household. The film illustrates how women are constrained by
social norms and are expected to submit to male authority.
This study concludes that film can serve as a medium for social critique of
patriarchal culture and can open up public awareness of domestic violence issues,
especially by centering women's voices as the core of the narrative.</note>
